This excursion begins in Cusco and heads towards Pisac, situated at the entrance of the Sacred Valley. Explore the remarkable ruins perched on the hilltop and take in the spectacular vistas. Following this, enjoy some time browsing the outdoor craft markets before hopping on ATVs to journey to the Maras Salt Mines. These mines feature thousands of salt pans carved into the mountainside where the locals extract salt. Next, visit the Moray terraces, which served as experimental gardens for the Incas. Finally, delve into the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo, renowned for its stunning views over the Sacred Valley.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco + Pisac + Maras + Moray + Ollantaytambo + Cusco

At 7:00am, a guide will collect you from your Cusco hotel in a private van. We will start our journey to the Sacred Valley of the Incas with a stop at the Mirador of Taray to appreciate a panoramic view of the Urubamba Valley and its traditional farming communities. Witness how agriculture in the Sacred Valley has remained relatively unchanged over the last five centuries.

We then proceed to the Pisac archaeological site, home to an impressive Inca cemetery with over 2,000 tombs. Explore the intricately designed agricultural terraces carved into the mountain, discover the Inca tunnel, and visit the religious area of this significant citadel. Afterward, enjoy approximately 20 minutes at the vibrant Pisac market before heading to Urubamba for lunch.

En route to the ATV camp, the guide will brief us on proper ATV usage. Our first stop will be the Salt Mines, where we will explore the extraordinary Maras salt mines. A natural spring at the valley’s summit releases a salt-rich stream, which is channeled into salt pans and evaporated to produce high-quality pink salt, a method used by the Incas for centuries.

Afterward, we will ride the ATVs to the Moray archaeological site, an ancient agricultural laboratory where the Incas created various micro-climates for crop cultivation. Following the guided tour of this unique site, we will return to the ATV camp before proceeding to Ollantaytambo, our final destination.

We will travel by van to Ollantaytambo, leaving the ATVs behind. Here, we will explore the well-preserved Inca village and the imposing Inca ruins, including the grand architecture of the Sun Temple atop the formidable terraces. The guide will elaborate on the significance of this site during the early Spanish conquest.

Following the tour in Ollantaytambo, we will return to Cusco, arriving around 6:30pm.
