INCA EXPEDITIONS offers a unique and captivating panoramic train experience as you traverse the Vilcanota River Canyon. Departing from the Inca town of Ollantaytambo, you’ll journey through lush sub-tropical jungle, approaching the edge of the Amazon as you near Aguas Calientes. From Aguas Calientes, a shuttle will take you up to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Spend ample time exploring the grand Machu Picchu, an archaeological marvel, and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the ancient Inca civilization.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

CUSCO – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU

The day has arrived for your visit to Machu Picchu! We will collect you from your hotel at 4:00am and transfer you to Ollantaytambo Train Station via our private van to catch the 6:10am Expedition train. (If you prefer starting from Ollantaytambo, we will pick you up from your hotel between 5:20 and 5:30am.) Your train will depart Ollantaytambo at 6:10am and enter the narrow Vilcanota River canyon, surrounded by steep canyon walls cloaked in vibrant sub-tropical jungle. Keep an eye out for Inca terraces across the river, some of which are still actively farmed!

Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, your guide will greet you at the train station. You will have some time to purchase a snack before taking the shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu. This mystical site is unlike any other in the world! Your guide will lead a tour of the Machu Picchu Citadel, covering its most significant areas. The tour, which lasts about two hours, will explain the division of Machu Picchu into agricultural, residential, and religious sectors.

After soaking in the magnificent views of Machu Picchu, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes by bus for lunch (not included). Depending on your train’s departure time, you might also have time for shopping, sightseeing, or visiting the museum or hot springs.

The return Expedition train will depart from Aguas Calientes at 3:20pm, 4:22pm, 4:43pm, or 6:20pm, following the stunning Urubamba River. The canyon near Aguas Calientes is narrow, with many beautiful sections of whitewater. You might even catch a glimpse of Wiñay Wayna on the steep canyon wall! Upon reaching Ollantaytambo, a driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your Cusco hotel in our private vehicle. You should arrive at your hotel between 7:00pm and 10:00pm, depending on your return train schedule.

Note: Hiking up to the Sun Gate and Inca Bridge is available starting June 1st, 2024, at an additional cost of US$55 per person. Due to the time constraints of the one-day tour, hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mt. are not possible. Return train times are subject to availability and advance booking. Our day trip package includes either Circuit 2A or Circuit 2B, depending on availability (please book in advance).
