Itinerary

DAY 1:

Train Journey to Machu Picchu: Gateway to the Lost City of the Incas

Embark on one of the most breathtaking train rides in South America as you travel to Aguas Calientes (6,693 ft / 2,041 m), the gateway to Machu Picchu (7,972 ft / 2,430 m). The journey offers spectacular views of lush jungles and towering mountains, with the rich biodiversity of the cloud forest emerging as you pass through the Andes. The scenery gradually changes from rugged mountain landscapes to the dense greenery of the jungle, making the train ride an unforgettable experience.

As the train winds through the mountains, you’ll enjoy comfortable seating with tables and large windows perfect for admiring the picturesque countryside. Relax with calming background music, and indulge in a selection of refreshing drinks made from local fruits and herbs.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes (6,693 ft / 2,041 m), you’ll be greeted at the train station and transferred to your hotel for the night. Take the evening to relax and prepare for your upcoming adventure to Machu Picchu.

  • Meals:None

Begin your day with a short bus ride from Aguas Calientes (6,693 ft / 2,041 m) up the zigzagging road to the iconic Machu Picchu (7,972 ft / 2,430 m). This 20-minute drive takes you to the entrance of the Incan citadel. After a brief introduction, you’ll embark on a guided tour of the ancient ruins, visiting important landmarks such as the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, and the Temple of the Three Windows. Explore the Royal Quarters and various burial grounds, learning about the rich history of this mysterious city.

Following the tour, take on the exhilarating hike to Huayna Picchu (8,920 ft / 2,720 m), also called “Young Peak” in Quechua. This steep climb rewards you with panoramic views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains. The ascent, restricted to only 200 visitors per day, showcases ancient terraces and structures at the summit, believed to be the residences of Incan priests and virgins.

Discover other nearby sacred sites, including the Temple of the Moon (7,218 ft / 2,200 m), a hidden gem nestled into the side of the mountain. You’ll also visit the Great Cavern (7,218 ft / 2,200 m), known for its intricate stonework, as well as the Temple of the Condor and the Principal Temple.

Before leaving, don’t miss the chance to visit the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) (8,923 ft / 2,720 m), an excellent viewpoint over Machu Picchu where the sun’s rays beautifully illuminate the citadel every morning.
