Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha

Your Andean adventure through the Lares Valley to Machu Picchu kicks off early with a 5:00 AM pickup from your Cusco hotel. You’ll travel to Huaran, where you’ll enjoy breakfast and meet your horsemen and horses. After preparing, you’ll begin a gradual 3-hour ascent towards Cancha Cancha. Lunch will be served by the river, providing a delicious and energizing meal prepared by your trekking chef.

Cancha Cancha (3,900m/12,800ft) is among the most remote and traditional communities, living as they have for centuries. With no road access, electricity only arrived here in December 2019. After settling into your tents and enjoying afternoon tea, you’ll have the chance to visit a local family and learn about traditional Andean village life, with your guide translating. After dinner, your guide will show you the Inca constellations that were, and still are, essential for agricultural practices.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea Time, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping facilities with bathroom access
Distance: 9 km / 5.6 miles
Time: Approximately 3.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Your day starts with a warm cup of tea or coffee, served by your guide before breakfast. Feeling energized, you’ll embark on a 7-hour hike northeast. The day begins with a challenging ascent, reaching the trek’s highest point at Pachacutec Pass (4,500m /14,800 ft). Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with views of glaciers, secluded lakes, alpaca herds, rugged valleys, and breathtaking mountain landscapes. Watch for Caracara falcons and Andean geese in the sky!

After reaching the summit, you’ll descend for 3 hours to our campsite near the Quiswarani community (3,700m/12,139ft). Along this isolated trail, you’ll see highland people in traditional attire herding their llamas and alpacas. The locals will interact with you in Quechua, the language of the Incas, with your guide translating and teaching you some Quechua words. As you approach the spectacular seven waterfalls, you’ll know you’re almost at the campsite!

At the campsite, everything will be ready for you. Enjoy hot drinks and appetizers before dinner, then settle in for a cozy night’s sleep.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea Time, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping facilities with bathroom access
Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
Time: Approximately 7 hours

Your journey continues with the most scenic day yet! You’ll begin with a 3-hour ascent to Willqaqasa Pass (4,200m/13,779ft), where you’ll be treated to stunning reflections of the mountains in glacial lakes. From the pass, you’ll admire the majestic Colquecruz and Pitusiray Mountains. The trek continues through Puna grasslands, fertile agricultural areas, and pristine natural lakes. A 2-hour descent brings you to the Cuncani community. Here, you might visit a local school and spend time with the children.

From Cuncani, a driver will take you through lush valleys filled with agricultural fields, fruit trees, and native flora, including begonias and wild orchids, to the Lares Hot Springs (3,100m/10,170ft). After soaking in the natural volcanic hot springs for an hour, you’ll enjoy lunch and bid farewell to your chef and horsemen.

After lunch in Lares, you’ll take private transport to Ollantaytambo, arriving after a 2.5-hour drive. There, you’ll have dinner before catching a train to Aguas Calientes for an overnight stay.

Your guide will provide a 2-hour tour of Machu Picchu Citadel, covering its most important areas. You’ll also learn about the three sectors of Machu Picchu: agricultural, residential, and religious.

Once you’ve taken in the breathtaking views of Machu Picchu, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes by bus for lunch (not included). Depending on your train departure time, you may have the opportunity to shop, sightsee, or visit the museum or hot springs.

The Expedition train will depart for Ollantaytambo at 2:55 PM or 3:20 PM, following the beautiful Urubamba River. As the canyon narrows near Aguas Calientes, the river becomes a series of stunning whitewater sections. If you look up at the steep canyon walls, you might even catch a glimpse of Wiñay Wayna!
