Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha

Your adventure through the Lares Valley begins early with a 6:00 am pickup from your Cusco hotel. After a 2-hour drive to Huaran, you’ll meet your horsemen and horses, get ready, and start the trek with a gradual 3-hour ascent to Cancha Cancha. A delicious lunch will be served beside the river, providing you with the energy needed for the hike ahead, prepared by your trekking chef.

Cancha Cancha (3,900m/12,800ft) is a remote and traditional village, self-sustaining for centuries, and was only recently connected to electricity in December 2019. After setting up camp and enjoying afternoon tea, you’ll have the chance to visit a local family, learning about life in this Andean village with your guide as your interpreter. After dinner, your guide will point out the Inca constellations that guided their agricultural practices.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea Time, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping facilities with bathroom building
Distance: 9 km / 5.6 miles
Time: Approximately 3.5 hrs
Difficulty: Moderate

Energized by a hearty breakfast, you’ll embark on a 7-hour hike northeast. The trek starts with a challenging climb to the highest point at Pachacutec Pass (4,500m / 14,800 ft). Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with views of glaciers, remote lakes, alpaca herds, and rugged valleys. Look out for Caracara falcons and Andean geese in the sky.

After reaching the summit, descend for 3 hours to our campsite near the Quiswarani community (3,700m/12,139ft). The isolated trail offers views of indigenous highland people herding llamas and alpacas. The local people will interact with you in Quechua, and your guide will help translate and teach you some of the language. At the spectacular seven waterfalls, you’re nearing the end of the trail!

Finally, reach Quishuarani and travel 2 hours to Ollantaytambo for dinner and overnight accommodation. If you’re staying at the Veronica View, you can enjoy the heated swimming pool or sauna before dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea Time, Dinner
Accommodation: Veronica View Hotel (2*)
Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
Time: Approximately 7 hrs
Difficulty: Challenging

This exciting day begins early with a 5:30 am pickup. At the train station, your guide will give you a lunch for your daypack. The train departs Ollantaytambo at 6:10 am, giving you over an hour to enjoy the scenery and have breakfast (not included). Alternatively, your hotel may provide a picnic breakfast, or you can bring your own.

Disembark at KM 104 (2,000m/6,560 ft), where your trek begins. After crossing the Urubamba River on a scenic footbridge, present your passport at the checkpoint and visit the nearby Inca site. The first 1.5 hours involve a gentle uphill climb with expansive views of the Urubamba River and a cloud forest, so be prepared for possible rain. The next hour and a half is a steeper ascent, rewarded by a beautiful waterfall.

After crossing the bridge below the waterfall, take time for photos and marvel at Wiñay Wayna (2,600m/8,500ft), with its fascinating history and dense jungle surroundings. Your guide will provide insights into the ruins and the rich flora and fauna. Following a short 5-minute walk, enjoy lunch.

Post-lunch, a mostly flat walk leads to the Sun Gate, offering your first glimpse of Machu Picchu! The gentle one-hour walk concludes with steep stairs carved into the rock by the Incas. Upon reaching the Sun Gate, savor the breathtaking view of Machu Picchu and take photos. The last 60 minutes down from the Sun Gate provide more photo opportunities and a chance to see additional important Inca sites.

Once at Machu Picchu, enjoy more photo opportunities from the viewing platforms above the site, particularly at the “House of the Guardians.” Arriving in the afternoon, you can take advantage of the quieter times for beautiful photos. Afterward, take the bus to Aguas Calientes, check into your hotel, enjoy a delicious dinner, and explore the charming town or relax at your hotel.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner at a restaurant in Aguas Calientes
Accommodation: Hotel Ferre’ Machu Picchu (3*)
Difficulty: Moderate
Note: You can leave your trek duffel at the Ollantaytambo train station to be sent directly to Aguas Calientes.

The awaited day has arrived! After an early breakfast, take one of the first buses to Machu Picchu to witness the sunrise, a truly remarkable sight. Your guide will conduct a 2-hour tour of the Machu Picchu citadel, covering the key areas.

After soaking in the exceptional views, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on your train departure time, you may have time for shopping, sightseeing, or a visit to the museum or hot springs.

The Expedition train departs for Ollantaytambo at 2:55 pm or 3:20 pm, following the stunning Urubamba River. As you approach Ollantaytambo, look out for the beautiful sections of whitewater and the Wiñay Wayna ruins high on the canyon wall. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, a driver will meet you and transport you back to your Cusco hotel, arriving by 7:00 pm.

Meal Included: Breakfast
