The trek culminates with a guided tour of the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel, followed by some free time before your train ride back to Cusco through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha

Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup at 5:00am from your hotel in Cusco. After driving to Huaran, you’ll meet the horsemen and horses who will accompany you. Once ready, you’ll start your hike with a gradual 3-hour climb to Cancha Cancha. A riverside lunch, prepared by your trekking chef, will recharge you for the journey ahead.

Cancha Cancha, situated at 3,900m (12,800ft), is one of the most remote and traditional communities, having remained self-sufficient for centuries. The community only recently gained road access and was connected to electricity in December 2019. After setting up camp and enjoying some afternoon tea, you’ll visit a local family to gain insight into traditional Andean village life, with your guide serving as the interpreter. In the evening, after dinner, your guide will point out Inca constellations used for agricultural purposes.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping facilities with bathroom amenities
Distance: 9km / 5.6 miles
Time: Approximately 3.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

After a hearty breakfast, the day begins with a 7-hour hike northeast. The trek kicks off with a challenging climb to the highest point at Pachacutec Pass (4,500m/14,800ft). Along the way, you’ll be treated to views of glaciers, secluded lakes, alpaca herds, rugged valleys, and breathtaking mountain vistas. Keep an eye out for Caracara Falcons and Andean Geese.

Once you reach the summit, a 3-hour descent will bring you to our campsite near the Quiswarani community, located at 3,700m (12,139ft). The trail remains isolated, passing through areas where indigenous highlanders in traditional attire tend to their llamas and alpacas. Your guide, serving as a translator and instructor, will help you interact with the locals in Quechua, the Inca language.

Upon reaching the seven waterfalls, Quiswarani is just around the corner! From there, we’ll take a 2-hour drive to Ollantaytambo and then catch the train to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll stay overnight in a hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel Ferre´ Machu Picchu
Distance: 12km / 7.5 miles
Time: Approximately 7 hours
Difficulty: Challenging

The highlight of your trek—Machu Picchu—is here! After an early breakfast at your hotel, catch one of the first buses to Machu Picchu to witness the sunrise, an experience you won’t want to miss. A two-hour guided tour will take you through the most significant sections of Machu Picchu, including its agricultural, residential, and religious zones.

After absorbing the incredible views, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on your train departure time, you may have time for shopping, sightseeing, or a visit to the museum or hot springs.

The Expedition train departs for Ollantaytambo at either 2:55pm or 3:20pm, following the scenic Urubamba River. The canyon near Aguas Calientes is narrow, offering picturesque views of whitewater. From the train, you might also spot Wiñay Wayna on the steep canyon walls. Upon reaching Ollantaytambo, a driver will meet you to take you back to your Cusco hotel, arriving by 7:00pm.

For those who pre-booked, additional hikes up Huayna Picchu Mountain do not include a guide.

Important:
You have the option to upgrade to the Vistadome Train for the same departure times (2:55, 3:20, 4:22, or 4:43pm) for an extra $67 USD. Early train departures can be arranged upon request at the time of booking.

Tour companies provide support such as transportation, meals, camping gear, and mule services for carrying heavy packs. A guide also enriches the experience by sharing knowledge about local culture and the natural surroundings.

Environmental Responsibility

When trekking the 3-Day Lares Trek, it’s important to follow the “Leave No Trace” principles. Carry all of your trash with you and dispose of it properly once you return to a town or city. Stay on the designated trails to avoid damaging the fragile environment, and avoid disturbing wildlife.

Final Recommendations for a Successful Lares Trail Hike

The Lares Trail 3 Days offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion, making it a rewarding alternative to more crowded routes like the Inca Trail. With proper preparation, respect for local customs, and an appreciation for the stunning landscapes, you will have an unforgettable experience on the 3-Day Machu Picchu by Lares trek.
