Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco – Ollantaytambo – KM104 – Wiñayhuayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Cusco

Your guide will pick you up at 4:00 AM from your hotel in Cusco to transfer to Ollantaytambo train station via our private transport. (If starting from Ollantaytambo, pickup will be at 5:30 AM.)

Before boarding the train, you’ll receive a box lunch to carry with you. After a scenic train ride of about 1 hour and 15 minutes, disembark at KM 104, where your hike begins (2,000 meters/6,560 feet above sea level). Cross the Urubamba River on a picturesque footbridge, show your passport at the checkpoint, and visit the first nearby Inca site. The initial 1.5 hours involve a gentle ascent with expansive views of the Urubamba River. You’ll pass through several microclimates, including cloud forests, so be prepared for damp conditions or rain. The following 1.5 hours are a bit steeper, with a stunning waterfall awaiting you at the end!

Upon crossing the bridge below the waterfall, take time to photograph the impressive Wiñayhuayna (2,600 meters/8,500 feet above sea level). These Inca ruins have a captivating history and remain partially hidden by dense jungle. As you’re close to Machu Picchu, you’ll be hiking through lush sub-tropical rainforest. Your guide will provide insights into the ruins and local flora and fauna before the short 5-minute walk to your lunch spot.

Enjoy a hearty, gourmet lunch amidst the tropical surroundings. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions or allergies at the time of booking.

Post-lunch, a mostly flat walk will lead you to the Sun Gate. The final hour-long walk features gentle inclines and declines, ending with a steep staircase carved into the bedrock, known as the “Gringo Killers.” Reaching the Sun Gate offers your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu, so take time to savor and photograph the scene. There are additional notable Inca sites between the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu, so enjoy the journey and ask your guide about these historical locations.

At Machu Picchu, take advantage of the viewing platforms to capture stunning photographs of the site. You’ll arrive in the afternoon as the area begins to clear out, providing the opportunity for beautiful photos in the softer light. Your guide will conduct a tour of around two hours, covering key parts of Machu Picchu and explaining its division into agricultural, residential, and religious sectors.

Relish this magical experience before boarding the bus to Aguas Calientes. In the evening at 6:20 PM, catch the return Expedition Train to Ollantaytambo and transfer back to Cusco by private van, arriving around 10:00 PM. If you opt for the Vistadome Train, departure is at 6:10 PM.

Meals: Picnic lunch
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

Faqs

What is the 1-Day Inca Trail?

The 1-Day Inca Trail is a shortened version of the traditional multi-day trek, covering approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the trailhead at Km 104 to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), ending at Machu Picchu. This trek offers stunning landscapes, archaeological sites, and a rewarding glimpse of Machu Picchu by sunset.

Who can hike the 1-Day Inca Trail?

This trek is ideal for people in moderate physical condition. While less strenuous than the full Inca Trail, it still involves several hours of hiking, some steep climbs, and altitude. It’s perfect for those with limited time or who prefer a less demanding challenge but still want to experience the iconic trail.

What should I pack for the trek?

You should pack lightweight and essential items: water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a rain jacket, and sturdy hiking shoes. A small daypack is ideal, and layers are key as weather can change. Since it’s a day trip, you won’t need camping gear or sleeping equipment.

How difficult is the 1-Day Inca Trail?

The trek is moderately challenging, with some steep sections. It covers about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) and takes around 6-7 hours to complete, depending on your pace. While not as physically demanding as the full 4-day trek, it does require good fitness and acclimatization to high altitudes.

What archaeological sites are visited?

The trek includes stops at two main Inca sites: Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna. Chachabamba is an ancient ceremonial site near the start of the trail, and Wiñay Wayna is a stunning terraced ruin with temples and baths that offers a glimpse into Inca agricultural and spiritual life before arriving at Machu Picchu.

How does the trek end at Machu Picchu?

The trek culminates at Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where you get your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. This moment is often emotional, as the ancient city appears dramatically in the distance. After reaching the Sun Gate, hikers descend into Machu Picchu for an afternoon exploration of the world-famous site.

Do I need a permit for this trek?

Yes, like the full Inca Trail, the 1-Day Inca Trail requires a permit from the Peruvian government. These permits are limited and tend to sell out in advance, especially during the high season. Booking your trek several months in advance is strongly recommended to secure your spot.

What is the best time to hike?

The best time to hike the 1-Day Inca Trail is during the dry season, from May to September. These months offer clearer skies and more stable weather, making the trail safer and more enjoyable. The rainy season, from November to March, can make the trail slippery and less scenic due to cloud cover.

Can I visit Machu Picchu after the trek?

Yes, after completing the trek and reaching Machu Picchu, you will have the opportunity to explore the ancient ruins in the afternoon. Many trekkers choose to spend time walking through the site, visiting the temples, plazas, and terraces before taking the bus down to Aguas Calientes for the return journey.

How do I get back to Cusco?

After exploring Machu Picchu, you take a bus down to Aguas Calientes, the town below Machu Picchu. From there, you’ll catch a train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, followed by a bus or car ride to Cusco. Most tour packages arrange all transport, ensuring a smooth and convenient return journey.

This guide will help you prepare for the journey, covering recommendations, tips, weather, how to dress, and physical preparation for this iconic trek.

Overview of the 1-Day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu

The One Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu is a 10-kilometer trek that takes you through breathtaking scenery, ancient Inca ruins, and ends with the majestic view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). This route is ideal for those who are short on time but still want to hike part of the famous trail and explore Machu Picchu in a single day.

Weather and Best Time to Go

The weather on the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 1 Day can vary depending on the season. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Dry Season (May to September): This is the best time to hike, with clear skies and mild temperatures. Daytime temperatures range between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), but nights can be cold, especially at higher altitudes.
  • Rainy Season (November to March): Expect rain, muddy paths, and reduced visibility, but the landscape will be lush and green. Temperatures can range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F).
  • Shoulder Seasons (April and October): These months offer a balance of good weather and fewer crowds. Some rain may occur, but it is generally manageable for the trek.

How to Dress for the 1-Day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu

The weather can change quickly, so it’s essential to dress in layers. Here’s a recommended guide for what to wear:

  • Base Layer: Wear a moisture-wicking t-shirt or long-sleeve top to stay dry and comfortable.
  • Mid Layer: A fleece jacket or lightweight sweater for warmth as the trail can be chilly in the morning.
  • Outer Layer: A waterproof jacket or rain poncho is crucial to protect you from potential rain, especially during the rainy season.
  • Hiking Pants: Quick-drying and breathable pants are recommended for comfort during the hike.
  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential for navigating the uneven terrain. Make sure they are well broken-in before the hike.
  • Accessories: A sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect against the strong UV rays at high altitudes.
  • Backpack: A small daypack to carry water, snacks, and any extra layers. Most tour operators provide you with a packed lunch.

Physical Preparation for the One Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu

While the 1-Day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu is shorter than the multi-day treks, it still requires a good level of physical fitness. The trail includes steep inclines, rocky paths, and high altitudes, so here are some tips for preparation:

  • Cardiovascular Training: Focus on cardio exercises such as running, cycling, or swimming to improve endurance. Aim for at least 30-45 minutes of cardio 3-4 times per week.
  • Leg Strength: Hiking involves lots of uphill and downhill walking, so incorporate leg-strengthening exercises like lunges, squats, and stair climbing into your routine.
  • Altitude Acclimatization: Spend a couple of days in Cusco (3,400m/11,152ft) before the trek to help your body adjust to the altitude. This will reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

Tips for the 1-Day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu

  3. Hydration and Snacks: Drink plenty of water throughout the hike to stay hydrated. Carry energy bars or snacks for quick refueling along the way.
  4. Trekking Poles: If you’re concerned about balance or knee strain, consider using trekking poles, especially for the steeper parts of the trail.
